Mar del Plata is an Argentine city located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean 400 kilometres south of Buenos Aires. With a population of 555,000 people, it is the 7^th largest city in Argentina and the ideal city to complete an internship.

As well as the natural beauty of Mar del Plata's wind-swept dunes and spectacular cliffs, there are nature reserves, elegant resorts, beautiful fishing villages, and of course the local culture and vibrant nightlife of the city.

In comparison to some of the other cities in Argentina, Mar del Plata is young. A developer, named Patricio Peralta Ramos, founded the city in 1874 and turned it into an industrial centre.

It is one of the major fishing ports and the biggest seaside beach resort in Argentina. As an important fishing port, industry was previously concentrated on fish processing and Mar del Plata's two large shipyards. The area is also host to other industry including textile and food manufacture. During the mid 1980s Mar del Plata saw the birth of electronics factories focused mostly on the telecommunications field. The true wealth of Mar del Plata has come with the overwhelming tide of tourism, which has taken place in the last half century.
