Nina H., internship in a school for disabled children in Melbourne, Australia: “I had a really great time at my school. Although I had never worked with disabled children before, my colleagues accepted me right from the start and gave me duties. I had many different tasks such as helping in lessons or with physiotherapy. But I also had duties for which I was solely responsible, and my colleagues were always willing to help me or answer my questions. When I left, we were all quite sad – myself, my colleagues and the children. My colleagues organised a small surprise farewell party with the children and I was totally surprised. I got a lot out of the internship even though I will not be working with disabled children in my future career. Nevertheless, I learnt a great deal from the kids and my colleagues: Passion, patience, taking responsibility for one’s actions, and much more. I will really miss the school and “my” kids!”
Melbourne, located in Australia's south-east, is the state capital of Victoria and a major centre of commerce, industry and cultural activity. With a metropolitan area population of approximately 3.8 million, Melbourne is, after Sydney, the second largest city Down Under. The city enjoys a temperate oceanic climate influenced by its location at the apex of one of the world's largest bays, Port Phillip.
It is also notable for its mix of Victorian and new futuristic architecture, especially the Melbourne Central Business District (CBD), which contains five of the six tallest buildings in Australia and at the same time many historic buildings such as the Royal Exhibition Building, the Melbourne Town Hall and Parliament House.
The city celebrates a wide variety of annual cultural events, performing arts and architecture. Melbourne is also considered to be Australia's live music capital with a large proportion of successful Australian artists emerging from the Melbourne live music scene. Melbourne has become popular for its street art. The city is also admired as one of the great cities of the Victorian Age (1837-1901) and a vigorous city life intersects with an impressive range of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century buildings.
Melbourne is widely known as the Australian cultural and sport capital. Australian rules football and cricket are the most popular sports in Melbourne and both are mostly played in the same stadiums in the city and its suburbs. The first ever official cricket Test match in Australia was played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in March 1877, which has become the largest cricket ground in the world. The first Australian rules football matches were played in Melbourne in 1858 and the Australian Football League is headquartered at the Telstra Dome.
Melbourne is home to Australia's busiest seaport and much of Australia's automotive industry. The city's port, Australia's largest, handles more than $75 billion in trade every year and 39% of the nation's container trade. Melbourne is also a major technology hub and retains a significant presence of being a financial centre for Asia-Pacific. In 2008, Melbourne overtook Sydney as the nation's leading tourism destination. The city is headquarters for many of Australia's largest corporations, including five of the ten largest in the country.
