The United Mexican States, or commonly Mexico, is a federal constitutional republic in North America. It is bordered on the north by the United States; on the south and west by the North Pacific Ocean; on the southeast by Guatemala, Belize, and the Caribbean Sea; and on the east by the Gulf of Mexico. The United Mexican States are a federation comprising thirty-one states and a federal district, the capital Mexico City, whose metropolitan area is one of the world’s most populous. Spanish Covering almost 2 million square kilometres, Mexico is the fifth-largest country in the Americas by total area and the 14th largest independent nation in the world. With an estimated population of 109 million, it is the 11th most populous country and the most populous Spanish-speaking country in the world. Economic Growth Between 1940 and 1980 Mexico experienced substantial economic growth that some historians call “El Milagro Mexicano”, the Mexican Miracle. Mexico has a free market mixed economy and is firmly established as an upper middle income country. It is the 12th largest economy in the world as measured in gross domestic product and purchasing power. Major trade agreements have been signed with the European Union, Japan, Israel and many countries in Central and South America. As such, Mexico has become a major player in international trade and export. Tourism According to the World Tourism Organisation, Mexico has one of the largest tourism industries in the World. In 2005 it was the seventh most popular tourist destination worldwide, receiving over 20 million tourists per year; it is the only country in Latin America to be within the top 25. The most noticeable tourist draws are the ancient Meso-American ruins, and popular beach resorts. The coastal climate and unique culture – a fusion of European (particularly Spanish) and Meso-American cultures; also make Mexico a very attractive destination.
