The city was founded by the Phoenicians, and was later occupied by the Greeks, the Carthaginians, the Romans, and the Moors. In 1487, the Catholic kings won back the town to their Christian beliefs. The cathedral, the Alcazaba (the castle of the Moors), the fortress Gibralfaro, and the Roman theatre bear witness to its long history and rich culture. Dispersed throughout the town you'll find a Roman amphitheatre from the 3rd century AD, a 6th century Muslim fortress and an 8th century cathedral where there once lied a mosque, to name a few.

Today, Málaga is a cosmopolitan metropolis, a commercial and cultural centre with Spain's second biggest harbour. Bullfights, theatres, concerts, cinemas, and sports facilities offer every kind of modern entertainment. Andalusia is known for its easygoing people with a zest for life. For Andalusians, meeting friends and talking about daily life while having a 'cerveza' and some delicious 'tapas' is of extremely important.

If you're interested in getting to know Spain's most famous region, Andalusia, Málaga couldn't be a more convenient place to learn Spanish. Málaga just a short trip from all the regional highlights: Marbella, Granada, Sevilla and Cordoba.

Though Málaga is not quite as famous as its neighbours, the city's culture and history run just as deep. Like Granada, traces of Islamic culture are infused throughout the city, but Malaga offers the added advantage of being right on the beach.

Malaga has an economy that has been mainly focussed on the areas of tourism services, research sectors and the construction industry.
