Salamanca is called the 'City of Wisdom'. And in fact, the spirit of the venerable university, one of the earliest in Europe, is still felt everywhere. Salamanca's splendour is visible in the many historic buildings. Its spirit and culture, having marked this city so deeply, is still felt in students' lives today. Because of its unique culture and history, in 2002 UNESCO declared Salamanca to be one of the world's cultural heritage sites. When you come to Salamanca you can experience the charm that has won the hearts of many Spaniards and foreigners.

The city has 180,000 inhabitants, 40,000 of whom are students. The university is one of the most famous in Europe and the city is also well known for its traditions. Strolling through the town, you will discover many different styles of arts, for example, the Spanish 'platersca' style, which is a very delicate form of decoration. Many people continue to come from all parts of Spain to study at the University, and the students represent a significant percentage of the city's population (the University has 40,000 students, approximately). The support of the student population is one of the most important economic activities in the city. These young people (also consisting of international students studying the Spanish language) provide Salamanca with a highly active night life, especially when school is in session on both weekdays and weekends. This has led Salamanca to be in the top list of cities with the highest bar per inhabitant ratios in Europe.
